한반도는 국토의 75%가 산악지대로 되어있으며, 동고서저·북고남저의 지형 특성이 있는 전형적인 산악국가다. 산악 지형이라는 한반도의 지형적 특성은 변화하지 않지만 거주하는 사람들의 인위적인 변형으로 미래 한반도의 작전환경이 수시로 변화하고 있다. 한국지역은 지난 2000년대부터 지속적으로 도시화가 진행되어 2010년에는 한국의 90% 이상이 도시화되고 있으며, 도시지역에는 전체 인구의 약 80% 이상이 살고 있다. 특히 도시지역은 수많은 인구와 복잡한 건축 물들이 혼재되어 있어 도시지역에서 전투가 벌어질 경우 수많은 제한사항이 발생한다. 지휘관들은 작전계획 수립 시 다 양한 상황에 대한 면밀한 정보분석을 통해 제한요인들을 극복하도록 노력해야 한다. 도시지역에서 전투를 수행하기 위 해서는 기존의 전투수행개념과 패러다임을 완전히 바꾸어야만 한다. 본 논문에서는 도시지역작전의 일반적인 특성과 한국 도시지역의 물리적 특성을 분석하고 한반도의 도시화 현상이 가속화됨에 따라 한국군이 어떻게 도시지역작전에 준비해야 하는 지에 대한 발전방향을 제시한다.

The Korean peninsular is a typical mountainous terrain country which has 75% of mountains with having featurin g of east-high west-low and north-high south-low type. Though the physiographic feature is not changed, the futur e operational environment has been frequently changed through artificial transformation by people living in the city. While Korea has been changed continuously since 2000, 90% of Korean territory has been urbanized and the majorit y of people live in the city. In particular, in the case of combat in urban area, there might be lots of limitations bec ause of confusing with millions of people and complex buildings. The combat commanders should make an effort to overcome such difficulties through detailed IPB(Intelligence preparation in the battlefield) considering various situatio n before planning for major operations. They should change warfighting concept and paradigm. This paper finds the normal characteristics of urban operation and physical traits of the Korean peninsular. As th e urbanization has been accelerating in Korea, practical implications about how to prepare the urban operation are di sc- ussed.
