Kim, Joongsub. 2015. A study on the Indigenous Language Protect Policy of Taiwan. Journal of Linguistic Studies 20(1), 43-58. The Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan, with population of about 500,000, are Austronesian language speakers and categorized into 16 ethinic tribes. The Council of Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan Government, was founded in 1996, and then actively utilized some strategies in order to preserve and promote the indigenous languages on the island, which are all considered as languages facing extinction. This paper reviewed some important governmental strategies, focusing on compilation of indigenous language textbooks, training of indigenous language teachers, teaching of indigenous languages, indigenous language proficiency tests, compilation of indigenous language dictionaries. The goal of the governmental efforts in preserving and promoting indigenous languages, encourage indigenous peoples to value their own languages, and enhance the revitalization of these endangered languages.
