이 논문은 황동규의 후기 시세계에 나타난 주요 시어 및 이미지의 성격을 분석하고, 이를 통해 시인의식의 변모 양상 및 시세계의 종합적 특성을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 황동규 초기 시세계의 한 특장은 일련의 ‘겨울 시편’들이 집중적으로 실려 있다는 사실이다. 이 시기 그의 시는 청춘기의 방황과 좌절, 고뇌와 불안, 정열과 허무의식을 ‘어둠’과 ‘차가움’의 이미지를 활용하여 효과적으로 보여준 것으로 평가된다. 특히 이 시편들은 주로 ‘겨울’의 이미지를 경유하며 청춘기 시인의 우울한 내면풍경과 전후시대의 비극적 이미지를 적극적으로 환기한다는 공통점을 지닌다. 이 과정에서 황동규 시인은 적막과 상실의 정서와 존재론적 고독감을 ‘고요’라는 상징시어의 제시를 통해 함축적으로 전언한 바 있다. 그런데 눈과 얼음의 이미지를 동원하여 내면의 우울한 정서를 표출하던 젊은 시인의 겨울노래는 후기 시세계에 오면 초기시세계와는 달리 따뜻하고 ‘환한’ 긍정적인 시공간으로 변모한다. 이 사실은 황동규 후기 시세계의 전반적 성격을 명징하게 드러내는 중요한 단초로 인식된다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 먼저, 최근 황동규 시에 나타난 겨울 이미지와 주요 시어의 특징을 구체적 작품 분석을 통해서 살펴보았다. 그리고 이후 작업에서 초기 시세계의 그것들과 비교함으로써 시세계의 변모 양상 및 변화의 핵심 동인을 살펴보고자 했다. 그 결과 이러한 시인의식의 변화는 시간의 흐름에 따른 시인 내면의 정서적 안정, 대사회적 의식의 고조, 선(禪)사상을 포함한 동서양 철학에의 지속적 관심, 자기갱생의 시적 의지 등의 요인이 복합적으로 작용한 것으로 파악되었다. 특히 중기 시세계 이후에 시도된 시간성에 대한 적극적 성찰은 황동규 시의 변화를 주도한 절대적 원인으로 여겨진다.

This thesis has as its purpose the analyses of the personalities of the main poetic words and images that appeared in the latter­period poetic world of Hwang, Dong­Kyu and the examination of the aspects of the transformations of the poet consciousness and the overall special features of the poem world through these. A strong point of the initial poem world of Hwang, Dong­Kyu is the fact that a series of 'the winter Psalms' have been intensively contained. It is evaluated that his poems of this time effectively showed the wanderings, frustrations, anguishes, insecurities, and the sense of emptiness of adolescence by utilizing the images of 'darkness' and 'coldness'. Especially, these Psalms mainly go by way of the images of 'winter'. And they have the commonality of aggressively arousing the depressing inner landscape of the adolescent poet and the tragic images of the post­war era. During this process, the poet Hwang, Dong­Kyu had implicitly delivered the messages regarding the emotions of solitude and the ontological feeling of loneliness through the presentation of the symbolic poetic word 'calmness'The winter songs of the young poet, who had been expressing the depressed emotions of the inner side by utilizing the images of the eyes and the ice, transform into the warm, 'bright', and positive poem world, differently from the initial poem world, when the latter­period poem world is arrived at. This fact is recognized as an important clue that clearly and lucidly shows the overall personality of the poem world of the latter period of Hwang, Dong­Kyu. Accordingly, in this research, firstly, the winter images that appeared in the recent poems by Hwang, Dong­Kyu and the special characteristics of the main poetic words were taken a look at through the detailed analyses of the works. And it was intended to take a look at the aspects of the transformations of the poem world and the core agents of the changes by comparing with those of the initial poem world in the works afterwards. As a result, it has been understood that such changes of the poet consciousness the following factors had compositely acted: 1. The emotional security of the poet according to the flow of time; 2. The heightening of the social consciousness; 3. The continued interest in Eastern and Western philosophies, including the zen thoughts; 4. The poetic will for self­rehabilitation, etc. Especially, the active introspections regarding the temporality attempted after the poem world of the middle period are considered to be the absolute causes that led the changes of the poems by Hwang, Dong­Kyu.
