헨리 나우웬은 ‘평화를 위한 전쟁’ 이란 모순된 세태(世態)와 역사를 통찰하며 오늘 날 평화를 재건하는 일이 기독교인들의 중요한 과업이 되었음을 주장한다. 그는 또한 예배와 복음전도, 치유, 세계적인 빈곤과 기아의 완화, 그리고 인권 수호 등 수행해야 할 다급한 일들이 많으나 이 모든 과업들보다 먼저 해야 할 것이면서도 가장 밀접한 사안이 바로 평화를 만들어 내는 일이라 강조하였다. 본 논문은 이러한 평화의 개념 을 올바로 이해하고 적용하기 위해 우선 본론을 통해 성경적인 접근을 시도하였다. 구약의 대표적인 평화개념인 ‘샬롬’의 성서적, 신학적, 역사적 의미와 신약의 ‘그리스 도의 평화’란 명제를 들어 논지를 전개하였다. 또한 구속의 역사를 따라 전해져 내려 오는 평화의 노래들을 사례로 들어오늘을 사는 우리 사회의 모순과 갈등, 무엇보다 평화를 위한 시대적 갈급함을 언급하였다. 특히 사회정의란 관계적 접근을 통해 19세 기 미국과 영국의 사회적 찬송가들을 소개하며 음악을 통한 사회적 정의실현이 어떻 게 평화를 이루는데 역할과 기능을 수행할 수 있는지를 살펴보았다. 특히 뉴욕의 위 치한 교회 찬양대와 베네수엘라의 한 음악교육이 이뤄낸 치유와 회복의 기적 같은 이 야기들을 통해 사회적 정의실현과 평화의 밀접한 상관관계를 설명하는데 있어 음악이 어떻게 그 중재적 역할을 수행하는지 아주 구체적이면서도 실제적 실례를 들어 소홀 히 하지 않고 무게 있게 다루었다. 아울러 논지를 펼쳐가는 과정이 통상적인 평화의 개념적 이해나 설명에 머무르지 않도록 노력하였다. 결론에서 본 논문이 오늘날 음악 이 우리 사회 속에 실현이 가능한 하나님의 온전한 평화를 위한 구체적인 실천이 가 능 할 수 있도록 돕는 작은 도전들과 가치를 발견하는 통로가 될 것이라 강조하였다.

Henri Nouwen contended based on an insight into ‘War for Peace’, which is ironical social conditions and history, that reconstructing peace is nowadays important Christians’ task. He agreed there are urgent and not delayable social matters that we have to deal with such as worship, evangelical preaching, healing, preventing global poverty and protecting human rights. However, above those, he highlighted that to achieve peace is more priority and most intimate issue. This thesis tried biblical approach for to understand proper notion of peace and to apply. It developed the points with biblical, theological and historical meaning of ‘shalom’, which is the representative concept of peace from Old Testament, and with ‘peace of the Christ’ from New Testament. Furthermore it mentioned these days our contradictions and conflicts moreover the needs of era for peace with Songs of peace ― which passed down following the history of redemption ― as an example. Especially it studied how fulfilling social justice by music accomplish a role, through relation approach of social justice with introducing 19 century’s American and British Hymn. Particularly it dealt importantly how music does its arbitrational role on explaining intimate relation of fulfilling social justice and peace, with very specific also practical example such as stories of miraculous healing and recuperating achievement of a church choir in New York and a musical education in Venezuela. Also in progress of unfolding points, this thesis tried to prevent from remaining in general explaining or conceptual understanding of ‘peace. In conclusion, this thesis accentuated that nowadays music would guide to find some challenges and values which helps to specific practice for realizable ‘absolute peace’ of God in our society.
