This paper analyzes the translation strategies of non-speech elements,such as background lyrics or visual signs, taking a different approach fromsubtitle translation research that focuses on the verbal speech text and itstranslation features. The audiovisual text chosen for the analysis is AugustRush (2007) and its Korean subtitles, which is a combination of translatedspeech, lyrics and visual signs of the original text. The implications of thestrategic decisions made by the translator are discussed based on thecontrastive analysis. The paper concludes that the aim of a subtitlertranslator should be to create a holistic multimodal target text taking into consideration the dynamic interaction of the variety of modes thatcontribute to the delivery of a coherent narration.
