The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of reduced training volume for 7 days before competition on performance(200m swim, combine event) and fatigue level(step test and profile of mood states: POMS) in 14 college-age modern pentathlonists. Subjects were randomly assigned to taper group(n=7, TG) and control group(n=7, CG). Training volume of TG was reduced by 15% everyday for 7 days before competition. Training volume of CG was reduced to 70% of normal training 3 days(D-3) before competition and maintained until competition day. The results were as follows; 1) Swimming records(200m) were faster after 7 day taper in TG(p<.001), but there was no significant difference in CG. 2) Fatigue level measured by heart rates in step test and by POMS during taper period were different between TG and CG(p<.05). In conclusion, 7 day taper before competition appeared to have improved swimming and combine(shooting+running) performance, and fatigue level in modern pentathlonists was also improved by taper.
