The aim of the study is to investigate whether translation universalhypotheses as a measure of textual fit between translated andnon-translated texts can be used to account for the naturalness oftranslation as suggested by Chesterman(2004). As a way of exploringthe research question, two English translations of the same Koreanfiction were analyzed for differences in mean sentence length, lexicaldensity and type-token ratio, which are associated with simplification, and lexical bundles as a linguistic manifestation of normalization. NativeEnglish readers rated the naturalness of the two translations. Theanalysis finds that as far as the two translations are concerned meansentence length, lexical density and type-toke ratio are not reliablepredictors of naturalness in translation, while lexical bundles can be anexplanatory variable.
