본고는 우리말 경음의 음성 실현 및 인식 양상에 기반하여 15세기 국어 겸양법 선어말어미 결합형에서 나타나는 경음 ‘ㅆ’과 ‘ㅉ’의 형성을 이해하고자 하였다. 첫째, ㅅ, ㅿ, ㅺ, ㅎ 말음 어간과 ‘--’과의 결합에서 이루어진 모음간 ‘ㅅㅅ’ 연쇄는 긴 치조 마찰 구간을 지닌다는 점에서 그대로 비어두 경음 ‘ㅆ’으로 받아들여진 것이라 여겨진다. 둘째, ㄷ, ㅌ, ㅈ, ㅊ 말음 어간과 ‘*--’과의 결합에서 이루어진 무성무기의 치조파찰음은 당시 파찰음의 음소대 음성의 대응 관계로 인하여 모음 사이에서 경음으로 인식되어 ‘ㅉ’으로실현된 것으로 보인다.

This paper aims to clarify the origin of tensed alveolar fricatives [s’] and afficates [ʦ'] in the conjugated forms with the object-honorific ending in 15th century Korean. The argument based itself on Korean language-specific phonetic and phonological facts: the phonetic realization of tensed obstruents and the phonemic interpretation of intervocalic unvoiced and unaspirated obstruents. Two results were derived: first, the intervocalic [ss] sequence made from s-, z-, sk- and h-final stems plus ending ‘-sʌp-’ has long friction at alveolar so that it should be interpreted as the tensed fricatice [s']. At second, the intervocalic unvoiced and unaspirated [ʦ] made from t-, th-, ʦ- and ʦh-final stems plus reconstructed ending ‘*-sʌp-’ is to be interpreted as the tensed affricate [ʦ'] not as plain or aspirated one.
