하나님께서 설교자에게 주신 의무는 성서 본문이 말하는 것을 그들의 회중에게 명확하고 효과적으로 전달하는 것이다. 또한 성서 본문을 통해 하시는 하나님의 말씀을 충실하게 선포하는 것은 설교자로서의 거룩한 의무를 이행하는 것이기도 하다. 그러나 성서 본문과 명확하고 효과적으로 소통하는 것은 아마 설교자에게는 가장 어려운 일이면서 동시에 가장 큰 도전일 것이다. 사실 설교자가 성서 본문을 해석하기 위해 학문적으로 접근하는 것에는 실재적인 간격이 존재한다. 이 간격은 성서 본문을 공부한다는 것과 실제로 하나님의 사람들에게 메시지를 전달하는 것 사이에 나타나는 실재적인 간격이다. 불행히도 성서 본문을 분석하고 그 분석된 자료들이 어떻게 설교에 반영되고 또한 설교를 구성하는지에 대해 가르침을 제공하는 곳은 의외로 적은 것 같다. 이 논문은 학문적인 성서 주석과 실제적인 설교의 전달 사이의 존재하는 실재적인 간격을 연결해보고자 하는 의도를 가지고 연구되고 쓰여졌다.

The God-given responsibility of the preacher is to deliver accurately and effectively to his/her congregation what the biblical texts says. Also, to preach faithfully the Word which God gives through the Scripture is to fulfill the divine mandate. To communicate accurately and effectively with the Scripture is probably one of the hardiest and greatest challenge for the preacher. In fact, a gap exists in the academic preparation of the preachers. It is the gap between the study of the biblical text and the actual delivery of messages to God's people. Unfortunately, I believe very few centers and institutes of biblical and homiletical training have ever taken the time or effort to show the student how one moves from analyzing the text to constructing a sermon that reflects and is dependent on that analysis. This article intends to bridge this gap between the exegetical study and the actual delivery.
