우리나라 신협은 1970년대에 이어서 1980년대에도 정체성 논쟁을 벌였다. 1970년대에는 정부지원에 따른 자율성 유지문제가 논점이었으나 1980년대에는 신협의 성장이 초래하는 정체성 위기문제가 논점이었다. 1980년대의 논쟁은 국제협동조합연맹 차원에서 주목한 협동조합의 정체성위기 문제와 유사한 의미와 내용을 가지고 있었다. 국제적으로 전개된 정체성 논쟁은 신협의 금융기관으로서의 발전할 수 있는 길을 열어놓았다. 그러나 우리나라의 논쟁은 뚜렷한 성과를 거두지 못하였으며, 정체성을 강화하는데 에도 기여하지 못했다. 오늘날에도 우리나라 신협은 지속적인 성장과 발전을 위해 정체성을 확인하고 나아가 이를 강화하기 위한 노력이 요구되고 있다.

In Korea there were heated controversies over the identities of credit unions in 1970s and 1980s. In 1970s they disputed whether the government supports should be avoided to keep the autonomy of the credit union, but in 1980s they disputed over the identity crisis which was incurred by the growth of credit unions. The points of the controversies in 1980s had the same contents and meanings as those that the International Co-operative Alliance gave attention to at that time. It seems that the internatonal controversies over the identity of the Co-operatives have paved way for the credit unions to develop as financial institutions. But the controversies in 1980s in Korea failed to realize the anticipate results. For the sustainable development even today it is necessary for the Korea credit unions to confirm and strengthen their identity.
