Thom S. Rainer는 미국과 캐나다의 불신자 306명을 대상으로 설문조사를 수행했다. 이 조사를 통해 그는 불신자들이 기독교(교회)에 대해서 동일한 입장을 가지고 있지 않다는 것과 효과적인 전도를 위해서는 각각의 입장에 적합한 전도방법을 사용해야 한다는 결론을 얻었다. Rainer에 따르면, 불신자들은 기독교와 교회에 대해서 가지고 있는 수용성(receptivity)의 정도에 따라 다섯 부류로 나눠질 수 있다. 첫째, 기독교에 대해서 가장 적대적인 태도를 보이는 사람(U5-Highly antagonistic), 둘째, 기독교에 대해서 저항적일 뿐 적대적이지 않은 사람 (U4- Resistant), 셋째, 기독교를 분명하게 수용하지는 않지만 대화에 대해서는 문을 열어놓은 중립적인 사람 (U3- Leaners & Apathetics), 넷째, 교회와 복음에 대해서 약간 수용적인 사람 (U2- Seekers), 다섯째, 복음에 대해서 매우 수용적인 사람 (U1-Waiting on you)이다. 이것은 복음 전도자가 효과적인 전도를 위해서 불신자의 입장에 따라 다르게 접근해야 함을 암시하고 있다. Rainer의 조사는 북미를 배경으로 하고 있다. 그러면 오늘날 한국의 불신자들은 어떠한가? 그들을 레이너 척도(Rainer scale)로 조사해 본다면 어떤 결과를 얻을 수 있을까? 그리고 이 조사결과가 오늘 한국교회에 주는 선교적 통찰은 무엇인가? 본 논문은 이러한 질문에 응답하기 위해 먼저, Rainer가 수행한 조사결과와 불신자들의 다섯 유형과 그 특징들을 서술하고, 한국의 불신자들 117명을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과를 분석한 후, 이것이 주는 선교적 통찰을 다음과 같이 정리하고 있다. 첫째, 불신자들 중에서 기독교(교회)에 대해 극도로 적대적(Antagonistic)이거나 저항적(Resistant)인 태도를 보이는 사람들(U4&U5)은 다수가 아니다. 둘째, 효과적인 복음전파를 위해서 U1 혹은 U2 같은 더 수용적(more receptive)인 사람들에게 집중할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 관계전도의 중요성이 다시한번 확인되었다. 효과적인 전도를 위해서 전도자는 먼저 불신자들과 관계를 여는 일에 집중해야 한다. 넷째, 불신자들은 소그룹 안에서 기독교 공동체의 교제와 가치를 경험하며 복음을 더 잘 받아들이게 된다. 다섯째, 교회가 세상으로부터 부름받은 공동체(ecclesia)이면서 동시에 세상으로 보내진 공동체(mittere)라는 이중적 자기 정체성(Bivocational identity)을 회복할 때, 한국교회는 불신자들에게 선교공동체(missional community)로서의 진정성을 각인시킬 수 있다. 여섯째, 기독교의 가르침을 따라 신실하게 살아가는 기독교인들의 삶이 복음전도의 중요한 도구가 된다. 일곱째, 다른 사람에게는 다른 전도방법이 사용되어야 한다. 즉, 더 수용적인 사람들에게 적합한 방법과 덜 수용적인 사람들에게 적합한 방법이 다르다는 것을 인식하고 각각의 사람들에게 가장 적합한 방법을 적용할 때, 복음전달의 효율성은 극대화 될 수 있다.

Thom S. Rainer conducted 306 interviews of unchurched people across America and Canada for two years. From the results of the research, he came to the conclusion that unchurched people do not have the same attitude toward Christianity. They are divided into five types: U1s are highly receptive to hearing and believing the Good News, U2s are receptive to the gospel and church, U3s are leaners and apathetics who are neutral with no clear signs of being interested yet perhaps being open to discussion, U4s are seekers who are resistant to the gospel, but with no antagonistic attitude, and U5s are highly antagonistic and even hostile to the gospel. Rainer argues that if we recognize which status our unchurched friends and family are in, we can much more effectively connect them with church. Thus, the Christians must become more strategic in inviting unchurched people to church. For example, for U1s, we can tell them about Jesus and invite them to church directly. For U2s, we should respond well to their various questions because they are seekers. For U3s, we must provide a simple and effective presentation of the gospel because they need clarity in understanding the gospel. For U4s and U5s, we have to use the indirect way of evangelism because they are resistant and hostile to Christianity. Rainer's research was conducted in North America. If we apply Rainer's research methodology to Korea, what results can we have? What missional insights can we get from the research? To answer to these questions, researcher carried out a survey of 117 unchurched people in Korea. He summarizes the missional insights from the survey. First, highly hostile and antagonistic people to Christianity are in the minority among unchurched people in Korea. Second, for more effective evangelism, we should be more focused on U1s and U2s who are more receptive to Christianity. Third, we need to concentrate on relational evangelism that makes sufficient use of relationship and fellowship. Fourth, small group can be a good way of guiding unchurched people to the faith community. Fifth, the church should understand its bivocational identity that is "being called and being sent." Sixth, the Christians' honest and trustworthy life is an important tool for effective evangelism. Seventh, we can maximize the effectiveness of evangelism when we apply different ways to different people because they are different.
