두만강은 한국 현대문학사 전개 과정에서 다른 어떤 강보다도 자주 문 인들에 의해 형상화되어 왔다. 특히 연변 조선족 시인들에게 두만강은 더 욱 큰 의미를 지니고 있다. 그들의 조부나 고조부가 이 강을 넘어 중국에 들어가 정착해서 살게 되었기 때문이다. 조상은 눈물을 흘리면서, 혹은 설 움에 복받쳐 노래를 부르면서 두만강을 건너가서 중국 땅에서 살아가게 되었다. 두만강 이남은(조부나 고조부의) ‘고향’의 의미로 남게 되었고, 이 제 시인들 자신의 조국은 중국이 되었다. 모국은 한국이고 조국은 중국이 된 아이러니컬한 이중성은 두만강에 대한 사색과 고찰을 가능케 하여 많은 시를 쓰게 하였다. 최근 십수 년 동 안 연변에서 발간된 시집을 모아서 훑어본 결과 두만강을 노래한 것이 17 편에 달하였다. 이들 시에서 두만강은 수난의 역사와 함께한 강, 비탄을 넘어 희망에 이 르는 강, 민족주의적 시각으로 바라본 강, 두만강의 현재의 모습과 의미 등 다양한 모습으로 형상화되었다. 통일이 가까워지면 가까워지는 대로, 멀어지면 멀어지는 대로 연변 조선족 시인들은 두만강 소재의 시를 계속 해서 쓸 것으로 예상된다.

Particularly DooMan river was often featured by many literati in the history of contemporary Korean literature. Especially that means a lot for Yanbian ethnic Korean in China poets. It’s because their grandfathers and great-great grandfathers crossed over the river to live in China. When they crossed the river, they sang songs with drew tears and sadness leaving their home town. While China is their homeland, the south of DooMan river means a ‘home town’ for their grandfathers and great-great grandfathers. It is so ironical that while China is their homeland, Korea is their mother country. Eventually it became a motive power writing poems containing speculation and consideration of meaning of the river. After study of those poems written for a number of years, there are more than 10-poems singing for the river. The river was poetry imagery of; with history of sufferings, over step the sorrow to reach the hope, viewpoint of nationalism, the present time of the river, etc. The ethnic Korean in China poets will continually write poems about DooMan river as a subject matter whether or not the unification is ever actualized.
