Kim, Dae-jun. 2012. Korean university students' attitudes towards native and non-native English accents. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 157-173. This report examines Korean university students’ attitudes towards native and non-native English accents and puts an emphasis on how the concept of ELF (English as a lingua Franca) has become rooted in Korean teaching and learning of English. For these purposes, five text reading recordings with different English accents for a verbal guise test and a questionnaire for an attitudinal study are prepared. Three different groups of Korean university students participate in this study. The data collected are analysed qualitatively in order to answer the study questions. It turns out that Korean university students still consider native English accents as a norm to follow in learning the language. However, they also appreciate non-native English accents as possible options for international communication in the ELF contexts. (Jeju National University)
