This study attempts to clarify the notion of grammar and grammatical ability for English teachers who are teaching and assessing L2 English learners within various models of communicative competence. Next, the mainstream issues in teaching grammar are reviewed with regard to L2 English education. Lastly, learning-oriented assessment of grammatical ability is introduced and discussed, in the same line with Purpura (2004).
