In order to give an account of syncope for the word general, Hammond (1997) proposes to add FAITH(FINAL) to his three constraints, F( σ ), *FOOTLESS and F(σ ). This paper examines his data on English syncope and thereby points out that Hammond's OT-based approach to syncope should be modified to a greater or lesser degree to postulate a new constraint FAITH(CODA), which requires that in syncopation the coda structure of the output have an identical correspondent in the input. Added to this is an attempt to apply this new constraint to account for any possible difference between resp(i)ratory and respir(a)tory in the degree of optimality
