Recent research on worry emphasizes the role of intolerance of uncertainty in the development and maintenance of excessive worry and generalized anxiety disorder. However, few empirical attempts have been made to find out if attentional bias for uncertainty exists in individuals with excessive worry. The purpose of the present study was to empirically investigate whether worry is associated with attentional bias for uncertain stimuli over neutral stimuli by distinguishing attentional orienting from attentional disengaging. Results of the present study showed that there was a high correlation between worry and intolerance of uncertainty based on self-report measures, which further supports previous research findings. In addition, it was revealed that low worry individuals had a significantly lower index of attentional orienting to uncertainty, compared to moderate worry individuals, but there was no significant group differences between low worry individuals and high worry individuals or between moderate worry individuals and high worry individuals. No significant group differences were observed in attentional disengaging from uncertainty, attentional orienting to threat or disengaging from threat. Future studies will need to explore the issue further by involving a wider range of participants and clinical group.

걱정에 대한 최근 연구는 과도한 걱정과 범불안 장애의 발달과 유지에 있어 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족의 역할을 강조하고 있다. 하지만, 과도한 걱정을 하는 개인들에게 실제로 불확실성에 대한 주의 편향이 존재하는 지의 여부에 대해서는 실험적으로 검증된 바가 없다. 본 연구에서는 걱정이 불확실 자극에 대한 주의 편향과 관련이 있는지를 주의 쏠림과 주의 철수 측면으로 나누어 검증하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 걱정과 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족의 자가 보고식 척도에서 높은 상관관계를 보여줌으로써 걱정과 불확실성에 대한 인내력 부족에 대한 기존 연구의 주장을 지지하였다. 추가적으로, 낮은 수준의 걱정 집단은 중간 수준의 걱정 집단보다 불확실성에 대한 주의 쏠림 지표에서 유의미하게 낮은 점수를 보여주었으나, 낮은 수준의 걱정 집단과 높은 수준의 걱정 집단이나 중간 수준의 걱정 집단과 높은 수준의 걱정 집단 사이에서는 유의미한 차이를 볼 수 없었다. 또한, 불확실성에 대한 주의 철수, 위협에 대한 주의 쏠림이나 철수 측면에서는 어느 그룹 사이에서도 유의미한 차이를 볼 수 없었다. 조금 더 다양한 피험자와 임상군을 실험 연구 대상으로 확대한 후속 연구가 현상을 더욱 명확하게 규명하는데 필요할 것으로 보인다.
