The purpose of this study is to investigate recognition of the referee’s decision in male gymnastics and improvement in the domestic gymnastics and to present the preliminary data for the development of the domestic gymnastics. Subjects, consisting of 51 college and non-college registered players in Korea Gymnastic Association, understood well intention of the researcher and gave frank answers. Semi-structured open-ended questionnaire was used and 4 referees and coaches had the in-depth interview. Lastly, we did triangulation of the theoretical research in which researchers, first-line professionals, and specialists in sports psychology have the consultation and discussion for the reliability and validity of the qualitative method. The results in terms of recognition of the referee’s decision are as follows: First, we found that players, referees, and coaches have negative recognition of fairness, consistency, and reliability of referee’s decision. Second, it appeared that players’ positive recognition is somewhat higher in the speed of referee’s decision. Third, 70.6% of players thought that referee’s decision influences the result of the race and 47.1% of players had experienced being emotional or shrinking by referee’s decision in their race. The results in terms of improvement in the referee’s decision are as follows: First, there is the way to leave it to referee’s conscience. Since other expedients could be arisen in spite of institutional strategies, they pointed out that constitution of referees with conscientious experts who are able to make fair decision and reinforcement of referees’ self-esteem will be the more fundamental solution. Second, several alternatives were suggested in terms of institutional approaches. As the ways to improve fairness, some of these were to make all referees be able to see each other by strengthening the education and to assign referees just before the game through a lottery system. Add to this another suggestion was to hold a conference or training after sports events which referees of cities and provinces of the whole country attend, such as National Sports Festival, in order to find the mistaken parts and seek for better solutions.
