제주전통주택은 섬이라는 특수한 지리적 여건과 자연환경, 생활문화, 민간신앙 등의 영향으로 육지부와는 다른 주택형식을 가지고 있다. 주택의 형식과 내외부공간에서 나타나는 차이로 인해 그동안 제주전통주택은 유형분류나 평면구성, 구조, 형태, 의장 요소 등에 집중해서 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 이러한 연구와 그 결과들은 대부분 주택의 형식적인 측면에 주목함으로써 주택이 가진 의미와 그 관계에 대한 분석과 해석에는 한계를 가지고 있었다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식 하에, 현대적 개념으로 제주전통주택에 대해 의미론적 접근과 해석을 하였다. 본 연구에서는 제주전통주택의 공간구성, 형식, 기능을 묶어 ‘공간구조’로 규정하고, 이를 다가성이라는 현대건축의 개념을 통해 의미론적으로 분석하였다. 다가성 개념을 통해 제주전통주택이 가진 새로운 의미와 가치를 드러내고자 하였다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the polyvalence of Jeju traditional housing, to give attention to contemporary architecture that we inhabit, and to escape from existing architectural concepts of Jeju traditional housing. This study seeks to find the meaning and possibility of the polyvalence on the basis of social and cultural factor especially poly structure in Jeju traditional housing. The polyvalence can be studied in the aspect of architectural space that molds human experience and perception. As a result of this study, two properties in the polyvalence are revealed. One property of the polyvalence is territorialization that is revealed by relations between space and space. Another property is that reterritorialization that is revealed in exchanges according to space setting of village and its structure. This results mean the polyvalence as interface which represents community and culture in Jeju traditional housing.
