본 논문은 사회의 지식창고로서의 대학이 산업 R&D 및 기술혁신활동에 미치는 파급효과를 분석하였다. 특히 대학연구의 성과 및 지식이 산업계로 전달되는 파급경로에 초점을 맞추었다. 연구결과, 기본적으로 대학연구는 산업 R&D 및 혁신에 중요하지만, 우리나라의 경우 전반적으로 대학연구의 산업계 R&D 및 기술혁신에 대한 역할, 즉 ‘대학효과(university effect)’는 상대적으로 크지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 산업별로 보면, 의료정밀기기, 화학, 기계장비 등이 대학연구의 혜택을 가장 많이 보는 것으로 나타났다. 대학에서 산출된 지식과 기술이 산업계로 파급되는 경로를 5개 그룹으로 유형화 시킨 결과, 유형 Ⅳ(공동연구 및 계약연구)와 유형Ⅲ(기술자문, 회의, 세미나)이 지배적인 것으로 조사되었다. 그러나 유형 Ⅴ(분가 및 조인트벤처)를 비롯하여, 유형 Ⅰ(학술대회, 세미나)과 유형 Ⅱ(논문, 저서, 보고서, 특허)를 통해서도 대학이 산업계 R&D 및 기술혁신에 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 정책적인 측면에서 볼 때 현재 정부, 기업, 대학은 공동연구 및 계약연구(유형 Ⅳ)와 분사 및 조인트벤처(유형 Ⅴ)를 중요한 파급경로로 전제하고 있는 경향이 있으나 다른 유형의 파급경로, 즉 학술논문, 특허, 학술대회, 세미나, 기술지도, 인력양성 등 다양한 형태로 기술지식이 파급될 수 있음을 인식하는 것이 중요하다.

The paper analyzes the influence of university research on industrial R&D and innovation in Korea. In particular, we focus on the knowledge transmission pathways from university to industry. The overall result shows that the 'university effect', which means the impact of university research on industrial innovation, is relatively less significant in Korea. By industry, medical equipments, chemicals, and machinery obtain more benefits from university research than other sectors. Among five groups of information transmission pathways we categorized, type Ⅳ(joint or contract-based research) and type Ⅲ(consulting, workshop, and networks) are dominant. However we found that other pathways, particularly typeⅠ(academic conferences and seminar) and type Ⅱ(academic papers, books, and patents) are also influential on industrial innovation activities. In terms of science and technology policy in Korea, it is important to recognize various knowledge transmission channels such as academic papers, patents, conferences, seminars, technological consulting, training, etc.
