This study set out to take into account the characteristics of a rural community and test whether a health calisthenics program for the elderly favored by the senior citizens in a rural community would affect their general mental health and quality of life. It also aimed to provide basic data that would contribute to the activation of a health calisthenics program for the elderly in the level of leisure and welfare service to promote their health and increase their quality of life. The subjects include 21 senior citizens that participated in a health calisthenics program for the elderly implemented to a group of people aged 60 or older at C Public Health Center. Considering the characteristics of C City, a mixed city of urban and rural functions, the investigator administered a 60-minute session twice a week for 12 weeks from November 27, 2010 to February 6, 2011, when was an agricultural off-season. The data were then analyzed to analyze differences in their general mental health and quality of life before and after the program. The analysis results show that there were statistically significant effects in their general mental health as their anxiety decreased and adaptation to social life improved. Statistically significant effects were also observed in their quality of life with an increase in their physical and interpersonal satisfaction. In short, the health calisthenics program for the elderly that took into account the characteristics of a rural community caused positive changes to the senior citizens’ general mental health and quality of life in the rural community. Those findings suggest that a health calisthenics program for the elderly will be a good candidate program as part of the leisure and welfare service designed to help increase senior citizens’ mental health and quality of life in a rural community.
