The purpose of this study is to analyze how people understand judgments of an umpire in fencing competitions and in which way problems can be improved. To achieve study goals, the research subjects are 196 people from college and general players, two leaders and two players registered as the players in Korea Fencing Federation were selected for the study. Also, questionnaires were distributed and in-dept interviews have been done to establish data bases. To analyze them, in case of the understanding of an umpire’s judgment, SPSS 15.0 was adopted for the frequency analysis. In addition, for in-dept interviews, a transcriber, coding and title creation techniques were employed, and to support the study’s validity, evaluation by research participants, triangulation and cooperation among colleagues have been performed. The study results are as follows. First, fairness of judgment by an umpire at fencing competitions and its
perception by fencing players indicate average points. For them, they have defeated on competitions due to unfairness of judgment and acknowledged that the reason for it is because an umpire was not qualified enough to give fair judgment. Second, for the solution, training to make fair judgment, the systems producing good umpires, educating expert umpires and fair designation of umpires are required.
