Understanding the Determinants of Trust in Online Health Advice : A Combinatory Approach

원문정보

초록

영어
The Internet has become an important source for acquiring health information. In this research, we propose a model of health information trust by integrating current research findings on trust with two major models in persuasion and argumentation, elaboration likelihood model and Toulmin’ s model of argument. The proposed model theorizes that trust in online health information is a function of perceived information quality and perceived risk, which are in turn determined by the content and source of health information. The content factor was manipulated for advice type in the forms of claim vs. claim+data vs. claim+data+warrant while the source factor was manipulated for adviser status in the forms of medical doctor vs. peer patient. The results largely support the proposed model, explaining substantial variance in trust (R2=.75) and highlighting the important but distinct roles of information content and source, perceived information quality, and perceived risk in determining trust in health information.
