The purpose of this study is to examine the tentative plans of collective habitate for improvement of urban residental district. The place of urban residence of Soun-dong in Cheongju is targeted in this research. In advance of drawing up tentative plans of collective habitate in traditional urban area, sufficient survey, investigation, and recording have been undertaken to give resonable confidence that the Soun settlement, its development, and historical importance are understood. While proposing the tentative plans, they are divided into two parts, that is, conjunction development of lots and urban block housing. And we'll examine the tentative plans of collective habitate by block, street and building system. The following is the results of this study. Conjunction development of lots is the priority improvement method, according to the realistic feasibility and the analysis of improvement condition. Conjunction development of lots is suitable method that it keeps existing community and existing block environment. But, It appears to conflict about investment and distribution between owners. Urban block housing is the improvement method all over the block. As a result of the examination about this, It has more various community, and it has the characteristics of the composition elements in urban space and mediums between urban and architectures. It is processed with development with inhabitants, legal·political support, and mutual agreement.
