Ontological Representation of Business Process Knowledge and Its Evolution Using Process Mining Techniques

A company’s success largely depends on its business processes, which evolve as its environment changes. Therefore, maintaining a well-defined set of business processes deserves much attention of senior managers. There are many types of knowledge associated with each business process, such as organizational unit responsible for its execution, resource, business rule and domain knowledge. These types of knowledge need to be managed systematically and continuously, but in reality, they are not managed well in most companies. This paper suggests a noble approach to capturing, and managing such knowledge for agile and efficient execution of business processes. First, it suggests the use of ontology as a standard representation of business process knowledge to be shared both by business world and by IT world. Second, it suggests the use of process mining techniques to extract new business processes from the analysis of business process log files created as business processes are executed. These suggestions are illustrated with examples.
