Recently, cloud computing has been attracting the attention from IT practitioners and academic researchers. Some optimists identify cloud computing as one of the prominent technologies and business trends that bring about immense IT industry transformation, encouraging incumbent IT corporations to reshape their product and service lines and jump into competition for the new emerging market while critics concern that the new IT trend has not yet matured and contains technical limitations and business risks that keep the concept still one step behind full realization. Considering both bright and dark sides of the emerging paradigm, we construct a conceptual framework to analyze business-characteristics of cloud computing and to outlook its impacts on businesses and prospective diffusion in the industry.
