The purpose of this study is to survey and examine closely the modern buildings and structures listed in the current registered cultural properties with focusing on their active applications to conserve the modern architecture, to analyze the factors of their nonuse, and ultimately to make plans to improve them on the basis of the existing modern buildings or structures listed
in the registered cultural properties. As a result of surveying and examining the 360 modern buildings and structures registered currently in the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, it was found that 268 properties had been used whereas 92 properties had been deteriorated and damaged without any use or function. The primary factors of nonuse included the loss of application (purpose of use), neglect, structural problems, deteriorated materials and damage. The present author suggests that it is keenly required to give top priority to how to conserve our cultural heritage, rather than designating or registering modern buildings and structures as national cultural properties.
