The purpose of this study was to analyze flexural-torsional buckling capacity for columns having asymmetric cross section. This paper presents classical theory and develops instability analysis of thin-walled structures. The linear and geometric stiffness matrix for an element of a general asymmetric thin-walled open-section is formulated, and the bracing stiffness for an element in addition to linear stiffness assembles into global stiffness matrix. An approximate non-linear analysis has achieved by load incremental solution. The results of example are in reasonable agreements with previous theory expression suggested by Timoshenko and Gere, and with previous approximate method suggested by Paavola and Salonen.
