In this research, we find the structural factors of industries that determine the R&D concentration ratios in industries and we analyze empirically the relation between R&D concentration ratio and industrial performance from the perspective of structure-conduct-performance paradigm. From the empirical results, we show that market concentration ratio, capital intensity and the global competitiveness of an industry raise the R&D concentration of the industry. On the other hand, R&D intensity and technological opportunity of an industry plays the role of diffusing R&D investments to many firms in the industry. These results show that the R&D concentration phenomena of an industry is influenced by the structural factors of the industry. Also, we find that R&D concentration of an industry has a negative effect on the industrial performance, which implies that R&D concentration ratio is one of many structural factors that affect the performance of the industry. From this research, we can derive the following policy implication that it is necessary to increase the total R&D investments level of an industry and to activate the R&D investments of all the firms that compose of the industry in order to raise the performance of the industry.

21세기 들어 한국 경제에서 가장 두드러지는 특징 중의 하나는 산업간, 업종간, 기업간 등 경제 전반에 걸쳐 양극화가 진전되고 있다는 점이다. 이와 같은 현상은 우리나라 경제 가 중화학 공업 분야의 대기업을 중심으로 수출지향적인 전략을 통해 성장한 결과로 설명 되고 있다(장재철, 2004 등). 양극화 현상은 성과 측면에서 뿐만 아니라 연구개발투자 부문 에서도 기업간, 산업간에 심화되고 있는 것으로 보고되고 있다(이기동, 2001; 서환주, 2001; 문혜선, 2006 등). 연구개발투자의 기업간 집중 현상을 살펴보면 2007년 기업의 연 구개발투자 중 연구개발비 기준 상위 5개사가 총 연구개발비의 39.6%를, 상위 10개사가 44.9%, 상위 20개사가 50.1%를 차지하고 있다(한국과학기술기획평가원, 2008).
