The purpose of this article is to explore the meaning and role of body in Zhu Xi's theory of cultivation. According to Neo Confucianism, cultivation can be said that body perform to body itself and sublimate body itself into the realm of saint. In this point, it can be told that the meaning of body is so important for Zhu Xi's theory. Therefore, this article researched the significance of body, especially by using Michael Polanyi's epistemological ideas. According to this article, Zhu Xi might understand about tacit knowledge in body, and regarded it as starting point of ‘Investigation of things and Improvement of knowledge’(格物致知) Furthermore, he accentuated the role of Small Learning(小學). Because Small Learning was the process of habituation and somatization of moral rules. Last, this article examined about the meaning of ‘Investigation of things and Improvement of knowledge’ from the viewpoint of body epistemology. For Zhu Xi, ‘improvement of knowledge’ means for the subject to indwell in moral virtue by being embodied with it, and ‘true knowledge’ means just the practical moral knowledge. In addition, the meanings of Investigation of Things includes that subject indwells in other beings' lives and accomplishes the unity of self and other beings through catching and embodying the principles of other beings' lives. Based on the above mentioned perspectives, this article finally illustrates the value of body in Zhu Xi's thought.

이 연구는 朱子의 공부론에서 신체의 의미를 고찰하고 있다. 그 동안 주자의 공부론에 대한 연구는 많은 성과를 이루어왔다. 그러나 공부의 과정에서 신체의 의미와 역할을 해명한 연구는 없는 듯하다. 공부란 몸으로 실행하고 몸에 실행하며 몸을 성취하는 것임을 감안할 때 공부론에 관한 연구에서 몸이라는 주제는 꼭 탐구해봐야 할 대상이라고 할 수 있다. 이 연구는 폴라니(M. Polanyi)의 인식론을 차용하여 주자의 공부론에서 신체의 의미와 역할을 탐구해보고자 하였다. 이 연구에 따르면, 주자는 신체적 암묵지를 이해하였고, 그것을 격물 공부의 출발점이자 근거로 간주하였다. 그리고 신체적 암묵지의 근원을 배양하는 공부를 미발 함양이라고 규정하였다. 나아가 주자는 신체를 도덕규범으로 길들임으로써 자발적인 도덕의식을 조성해가는 공부과정, 즉 소학 공부에 큰 의미를 부여하였다. 소학 공부는 도덕규범을 습관화하고 신체화함으로써 격물치지에 필요한 신체적 암묵지를 양성하는 과정이다. 이 연구에 따르면, 격물치지의 목적과 경계도 신체의 의미와 연결하여 새로이해명할 수 있다. 주자는 격물치지를 통해 眞知를 얻어야 한다고 강조했는데, 진지란 도덕지식을 신체화하여 자동적인 실천력을 획득하는 단계를 가리킨다. 이것은 知至의 경지이기도 하다. 나아가 주자는 격물치지가 타자의 생명 이치를 파악하여 자기화함으로써 타자의 삶에 적극적으로 참여하는 단계에까지 이르러야 한다고 역설했다. 이는 자기를 타자에게 확장하고 타자를 자기 안에 內住시키는 合內外의 경지를 뜻한다.
