Picture books, as cultural contents, have reflected the nation’s long history and culture, while having developed into the industry of OSMU through long-seller characters. For example, Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh and Moomin have made a successful licensing in the character industry, theme parks and museums based on their original picture book. The objective of this research is to prove the appropriateness of support for domestic picture book artists, well beyond the current government’s support for the contents industry being mainly focused on animations. The successful cases of OSMU identified in domestic and international picture books will be provided. The research asks the question of ‘Is OSMU of domestic picture books possible?’, and looks at domestic and international contents; current situation of picture book market; and domestic and international picture books of OSMU that have been successful. As a methodology, the researcher had a look at five picture books that had been developed within more than six contents, which can be considered as the conditions of success for OSMU of picture books. Detailed analysis has been preceded in relation to characters, structure of stories and OSMU of picture books. Korea has relatively shorter history of OSMU business in comparison to that of international context, however the prospects seems positive for the domestic picture book market and artists, considering the success of Grumpang and Duli; which is also suggestive for the government’s policy on contents support.

문화콘텐츠로서 그림책은 오랜 역사와 자국의 문화를 담고 있으며 현재는 롱셀러 캐릭터 등 OSMU로 산업화 하였다. 예로 ‘피터 래빗’, ‘위니 더 푸우’, ‘무민’ 등은 그림책의 원 소스로 성공하여 캐릭터 산업뿐 아니라 테마 파크나 박물관 등으로 공간까지 라이선싱이 성공적으로 확대되었다. 연구목적은 정부의 콘텐츠 산업 지원이 캐릭터, 만화, 애니메이션 등에 집중된 것을 넘어서서 국내 그림책의 작가 지원에 대한 당위성을 국내외 그림책의 OSMU 성공사례를 통하여 증명하고자 하는 데 있다. 국내 그림책의 OSMU는 가능한가? 를 연구문제로 기초연구는 국내외 콘텐츠와 그림책시장 현황 및 성공한 OSMU의 국내외 그림책을 살펴보았다. 연구방법은 그림책의 OSMU 성공사례 조건으로 그림책의 캐릭터사업, 애니메이션, 뮤지컬, 음악, 게임과 박 물관 등 최소 6개 이상의 콘텐츠로 개발된 그림책 5권을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 세부적 분석은 그림책의 캐릭 터와 스토리 구조 및 OSMU를 중심으로 분석조건에 맞추어 연구했다. 외국 그림책의 OSMU 사업에 비하여 짧은 역사임에도 불구하고 우리 그림책 ‘구름빵’과 ‘둘리’의 성공은 국내 그림책 시장, 그림책 작가에게 희망적이며 정부의 관련 콘텐츠 지원정책에도 시사하는 바가 매우 크다고 할 수 있다.
