As the picture book market had been expanded to a great extent throughout the 20th century, story genres and expressions of illustrations have been developed in diverse ways. This study analyses two picture books that are particularly well-expressed in terms of artistic creativity in writings and pictures among Lionni’s 21 Fable Picture Books, which are Grimi’s Dream and Fredrick. These two books are investigated through the methodology of Visual Design Grammar, which was introduced by Kress and Leeuwen (1996). The paper examines artistic creativity of these two picture books, based on the study of the author, story of the book, illustrations and two main characters (Frederick and Matthew). The paper concludes with the idea that Fable Picture Books are categorised in two ways and both of them should capture the author’s intention for artistic symbolism by presenting clear theme and sympathizing story, in order to attribute creativity to picture books. The main characters represent the author’s Artistic Creativity not only in terms of individual’s problem solving, but also as a positive directions for a community. This would be meaningful to all generations particularly in the society where integrative and creative thinking is required while there widely exist competitiveness and individualism. Especially Fable Picture Books would help growing children’s thinking process and creativity, by understanding their community and culture.

20세기에 들어서 그림책 시장이 대규모로 확대됨에 따라 우화 그림책이 포함되는 장르 및 일러스트레이션의 표현방식도 다양하게 발전되고 있다. 이솝 이후의 대표적 우화 그림책의 대가로 알려진 레오 리오니는 동물과 무생물 등을 주인공으로 하여 내용을 쉽게 전달하며, 삶의 지혜와 감동을 담아낸다. 본 연구는 리오니 우화 그림책 21권 가운데 예술적 창의성이 글과 그림으로 잘 표현된 그리미의 꿈과 프레드릭 두 권을 통해 작가가 전달하고자 한 예술적 창의성을 Kress와 Leeuwen(1996)의 시각 디자인의 문법을 이용하여 분석한다. 작가와 그림책의 스토리, 표현된 일러스트레이션과 두 주인공(Frederick과 Matthew)을 중심으로 그림책에 나타난 예술적 창의성을 연구하였으며 다음과 같은 결론이 도출되었다. 우화 그림책은 어린이 중심에서 발상된 것과 어른으로서 발상된 두 종류가 있지만, 공통점은 주제가 분명하고 내용이 공감되어야 하며 캐릭터 등을 통하여 작가가 전달하고자 하는 예술적 상징성을 포착할 수 있어야 그림책을 통해서 창의성을 갖게 된다는 점이다. 리오니는 주인공의 예술적 창의성을 개인 문제의 해결뿐 아니라 공동체가 꿈꾸는 긍정적 방법으로도 제시해 주고 있다. 리오니의 우화 그림책은 모든 연령층에게 시사하는 바가 크며, 어린이에게 사고의 폭을 넓혀주며 의사소통의 매체가 되기도 한다. 즉, 어린이가 속한 공동체를 이해하며 어린이의 통합적 사고와 행동 및 예술적 창의성에도 이바지할 것이다.
