In order to identify variables affecting music therapy outcomes and the relationships among them, the investigators emailed a survey to 328 music therapists who were members of the Korean Music Therapy Association. Results were: (1) One may categorize variables affecting music therapy outcomes in relation to (a) the music therapist (b) the client, and (c) the music. (2) The music therapist's attitude was shown to be the most important variable affecting music therapy outcomes. (3) Music activities which were focused on client's need affect music therapy outcomes directly. (4) The client’s functional skills do not affect music therapy outcomes. However, the client’s attitudes such as preference, emotional bond with the therapist, and degree of participation, affect music therapy outcomes. Overall, the study’s findings suggest that it is important to improve the therapist's attitudes, such as therapeutic alliance, positive emotion, and the therapist's professionalism in order to promote the effectiveness of music therapy.

이 연구는 음악치료 결과에 영향을 미치는 변인들을 구조적으로 분석하기 위해 (사)한국음악치료학회 정회원인 음악치료사를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 총 382명을 대상으로 하였으며 이중 150명의 응답을 받았고 137부를 분석하였다. 분석방법은 SPSS 15.0과 AMOS 7.0 프로그램을 적용하여 빈도, 백분율, 평균, 표준편차, 상관계수, 신뢰도 분석, 요인분석, 공분산구조방정식 분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 자료 분석 결과 및 논의를 통해 도출된 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 음악치료 결과에 영향을 미치는 변인들은 치료사와 관련된 변인, 클라이언트와 관련된 변인, 음악과 관련된 변인으로 구분할 수 있었다. 치료사와 관련된 변인은 다시 치료사 전문성과 치료사 태도로, 클라이언트와 관련된 변인은 클라이언트 기능과 클라이언트 태도로 구분되었다. 둘째, 음악치료 결과에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 변인은 치료사 태도 즉, 치료사의 치료적 동맹 태도와 긍정적인 정서 상태이다. 그리고 치료사 전문성은 치료사 태도를 통해 음악치료 결과에 간접적으로 영향을 미친다. 셋째, 음악활동은 음악치료 결과에 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 변인임을 확인할 수 있었다. 넷째, 클라이언트의 인지, 정서, 사회, 언어, 신체기능은 음악치료 결과에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이 연구는 음악치료 결과를 설명하기 위해서는 치료사가 치료목적을 잘 이해하고 치료상황에서 책임감을 갖고 노력하는 치료적 동맹 태도와 자신감 등의 긍정적인 정서 상태가 가장 중요하며 치료사의 전문성을 바탕으로 적용된 음악활동 역시 관심을 가져야 할 것이다. 이를 위한 실천방안으로는 치료사의 전문성 향상을 위한 프로그램 개발, 임상에서의 재교육, 치료사의 내면적인 만족을 위한 프로그램 개발과 클라이언트의 내적인 동기부여를 위한 방안이 필요하다.
