The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of music therapy students who participated in a keyboard-oriented music therapy improvisation class and to suggest appropriate improvisational pedagogy based on the results of the study. Nine music therapy master students participated in this study and data were gathered through semi-constructed interview. Data were analyzed by using consensual qualitative research methods of Hill, Thompson and William(1997). The results of the study revealed five domains and 27 categories and subcategories. The domains were ‘relationship with music,’ ‘factors leading to growth in improvisation class,’ ‘factors
prohibiting growth in improvisation class,’ ‘results of growth,’ and ‘expectation for future improvisation class.’ This study suggests that various factors leading to growth in improvisation class affect participants' technical and intrapersonal growth. Also, it was found that difficulties in improvisation class result in demands for higher expectations for future class such as tutor's specified instruction and modeling, better acceptance and support by the tutor, and balance between theory and practice.

이 연구는 건반중심의 음악치료 즉흥연주 수업에 참여한 학생의 경험을 이해하고 이를 바탕으로 그들에게 보다 적합한 즉흥연주 교수 방법을 제안하는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해, 아홉 명의 음악치료 석사과정 학생들의 경험이 반 구조화된 심층면접을 통해 수집되었으며, 결과는 Hill, Thompson과 William(1997)의 합의적 질적 연구방법론을 사용해분석되었다. 결과 분석을 통해 ‘음악과의 관계,’ ‘즉흥연주 수업에서 성장을 이끄는 동인,’‘즉흥연주 수업에서 성장을 저해하는 요인,’ ‘성장의 결과’ 그리고 ‘즉흥연주 수업에서의 기대’의 총 다섯 개의 도메인과 27개의 범주 및 하위범주가 도출되었다. 연구 결과, 수업에서의 다양한 성장의 동인이 참여자의 기술적이고 개인 내적 성장으로 이끌어지는 반면, 수업에서의 어려움은 강사의 구체적 지도와 모델링, 강사의 수용과 지지, 그리고 이론과 실제의 조화와 같은 미래 즉흥연주 수업에 대한 기대를 유발하는 것으로 나타났다.
