The influence of picture books on children can be found in many different areas, such as the linguistic ability, the cognitive development, the social skills, and above all, the emotionality. Animal characters often play an important role in picture books, because children prefer animal fables. In Korea, tiger is by far the most important animal. The intimate relationship between tiger and the Koreans is evident in the fact that the appearance of tiger in Korean folktales can be traced back to the Dangun mythology. Even in nowadays, there are numerous picture books on tiger. Likewise, foreign picture books tell different animal fables based on the country’s own culture like wolves and foxes. The reason why animals appear frequently in children’s picture books could be explained by the theory of animism. In other words, the young readers personify animals while reading and consequently they identify themselves with the animal characters. Horang-i picture books may affect children indirectly, through the depiction of those various characteristics of tigers, through the languages and through their educational impact. Therefore, this study investigates the key features of Horang-i picture books by analysing different characteristics and illustrations of the main tiger characters appeared in the folktale books hitherto published. The following questions arise for the main objectives. 1. How did scholars classify and define the characteristics of Horang-i? 2. What are the ratios and examples of the characteristics and illustrations of Horang-i characters in currently published Horang-i picture books?

그림책은 어린이들에게 언어, 인지, 사회성 등 여러 발달영역에 영향을 주고 있지만, 특히 정서적으로 중요하다. 어린이그림책에서 동물 캐릭터가 중요한 소재가 되는 것은 그들이 동물을 주인공으로 한 동화와 우화를 좋아하기 때문이다. 그 동물 중 호랑이는 우리에게 매우 특별한 존재이다. 건국설화에서 비롯된 호랑이는 우리 민족의 생활과 심성에 매우 밀접하게 자리 잡고 있으며 지금도 많은 그림책에 등장한다. 다른 나라에도 늑대나 여우 등 다양한 동물 소재 전래동화 그림책들이 많이 있다. 이는 물활론(物活論)에 따른 것으로 세계의 모든 어린이는 그림책의 동물을 의인화하여 자신과 동일시하기 때문이다. 다양한 호랑이 성격을 통해서 호랑이 그림책은 어린이에게 언어 및 교육적인 것을 포함한 간접 영향을 줄 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 현재 출판된 호랑이그림책에서 호랑이성격 유형과 일러스트의 유형을 조사 분석하여 호랑이그림책의 특징을 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 연구목적을 위한 연구문제는 다음과 같다. 1. 학자들이 분류한 호랑이 성격은 무엇인가? 2. 현재 출판된 호랑이그림책에서 호랑이성격 유형과 일러스트의 유형의 예와 비율은?
