The number of suicides increase continuously from 3,157 in 1990 to 12,047 in 2005. And the annual suicide rate rapidly went up in 1996 and hit the highest in 2005. Furthermore the level of suicide which is of ten leading causes of death is rising steadily. These kinds of problem are too complex to solve completely. But, this study analyzes the cases of depression, modeled suicide and suggests some social countermeasures for solving these problems. First, suicide correlates with social economic factors like unemployment, inequality between the rich and the poor, divorce, business condition. Suicide among the poor for the reasons of economic conditions is in the rapid increase recently. Lower social class in Korea is revealed as risk groups. This study concludes that well controlled and balanced social welfare and security system can reduce suicide risk, especially among people who are at lower social class. And suicide committed by the poor should be resolved at a national level. So, the government should establish social․economic safety net to support the poor. Second, the access to suicide means should be strictly controlled. The circulation and sale of fatal means should be regulated by the government. Sites where have symbolic and suggestive effect like the Han River and skyscrapers need to be inspected. And internet suicidal site where sale suicidal means and promote a joint suicide should be strongly prohibited. Third, suicide has a strong association with mental disorder and contributes to the excess mortality of the mentally ill. Highly significant psychiatric factors in suicide include depressive disorders, substance abuse, schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Especially, numerous studies have documented a strong association between suicide and depression. This study suggests the national practical prevention programs for suicides through the expansion and coordination of existing mental health and welfare policy. Finally, suicide makes society anxious and the modeled suicide which resembles the former suicide could be followed. So, it is necessary that strong social policy about prevention of suicide should be established.

본 연구에서는 우리나라에서 만연하고 있는 자살의 원인을 이론적으로 분석하고, 최근에 발생한 자살유형 중 특히 심각하다고 생각되는 모방 자살과 우울증 자살을 사례로 선정하여 분석(case study)하였다. 아울러 이러한 자살에 관한 이론적 배경과 사례분석을 근거로 하여 다음과 같이 자살에 대한 사회적 대책을 제시하였다. 첫째, 자살과 사회․경제적인 요인들의 상관관계에 관한 선행연구들을 검토해보면, 자살과 사회․경제적인 요인은 상당한 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타나 자살은 단순한 감정의 문제가 아니라 사회․경제적 문제인 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 자살에 더욱 취약한 것으로 드러난 사회적 약자를 보호하기 위해서는 실업, 사회적 불평등, 이혼 등의 문제를 해결하기 위한 사회․경제적 안전망의 구축이 시급하다. 둘째,일반인들의 자살에 대한 접근을 통제해야 할 것이다.농약, 약물 같은 치명적 자살수단에 대한 접촉과 유통 및 판매를 적극적으로 규제해야 하며, 한강, 고층빌딩의 옥상 등 자살의 상징 및 암시효과가 큰 장소에 대한 점검도 요구된다. 그리고 자살도구를 판매하거나 동반자살을 부추기는 자살 사이트에 대하여도 지속적인 통제가 이루어져야 한다. 셋째,자살은 정신장애와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있는데,특히 우울증과 깊은 관계가 있다. 최근에는 우울증 자살이 잇따라 발생하고 있으며, 연예인, 여대생, 공무원, 군인, 주부 등 성별, 연령과 직업을 가리지 않고 우울증을 앓고 있는 사회 각계각층의 사람들이 자살이라는 극단적인 선택을 하는 경우가 점차 증가하고 있다. 따라서 국민의 생명을 위협하는 우울증 자살을 예방하기 위해서 사회복지적인 치료 및 예방 센터와 프로그램이 구축되어야 할 것이다.
넷째,유명인의 자살은 자살의 모방효과 및 암시효과를 초래하는데, 자살의 모방효과를 최소화하기 위해서는 언론의 자살관련 보도가 제한되어야 한다.
