This study investigated the cross-cultural differences in the concept of face between Korea and the United States. Americans who have cultural value of independence and individualism were supposed to regard as important negative face and positive face which were strongly associated with these cultural value. On the other hand, Koreans who have cultural value of interdependence and collectivism were assumed to perceive normative face and displaying face to be important. Data were collected to test these propositions empirically. Various hypothetical situations in which various types of face were manipulated were constructed. Korean and Ameican subjects were asked how important face was perceived to be in the various hypothetical communication situations. The results showed that as expected, normative face and displaying face were more important to Koreans than Americans. However, unexpectedly negative face and positive face also were found to be more important to Koreans than Americans. As a result, Koreans perceived face to be more important than Americans regardless of the types of face. The implications of findings were discussed.

본 연구는 한국인들이 느끼는 체면과 미국인들이 느끼는 체면에 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 실증적으로 조사한 비교문화권적 연구이다. 미국인들이 사회적으로 중요시하는 체면은 개인주의적 문화성향과 연결되어 있는 반면에, 한국인들이 사회적으로 중요하게 여기는 체면은 집단주의적 문화성향과 연결되어 있다는 이론적 논리에 바탕을 두어 본 연구는 한국인과 미국인의 체면에 대한 문화적 차이 가설을 추론하고 있다.미국인들은 부정적 체면(독립적이고 자치적인 사람이라는 이미지)과 긍정적 체면(능력있는 사람이라는 이미지)을 중요시 여기고 있는 반면에,한국인들은 규범적 체면(사회적 규범과 예의범절을 잘 지키는 사람이라는 이미지)과 과시적 체면(남들보다 앞서며 뛰어나다라는 사람의 이미지)을 중요하게 여기고 있다는 가설과 한국인들은 미국인들에 비하여 상대방의 체면에 더욱 커다란 관심을 보인다는 가설이 본 연구에서 제시되고 있다. 본 연구에서 제시된 가설을 실증적으로 검증하기 위하여, 한국과 미국에서 대학생들을 피험자로 한 실험 연구를 실시하였다. 체면적 속성이 바뀌는 다양한 가상적인 대화상황을 대학생들에게 제시하고 각 대화상황에서 느끼는 체면의 정도를 응답케 함으로써 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료를 분석한 결과, 기대한 대로 규범적 체면과 과시적 체면은 미국인에 비하여 한국인에게 더욱 중요한 체면이라는 것이 입증되었다. 그러나 부정적 체면의 경우 한국인과 미국인 간에는 차이가 없고 긍정적 체면의 경우 한국인이 미국인에 비하여 더욱 중요하게 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 한국인들은 미국인들에 비하여 상대방의 규범적 체면에 대한 관심을 더욱 많이 보이고 있으나 다른 유형의 체면에 대해서는 한국인과 미국인은 상대방 체면에 대하여 비슷한 정도의 관심을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 부분적으로 가설이 입증되었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과에 대한 다양한 이론적 함의가 논의되고 있으며 이 주제에 대한 앞으로의 연구도 제시되고 있다.
